Imagine the family home place where you can truly kick back and relax. The paint may be a little chipped and the porch screen door a bit worn, but it's the one place you always feel welcome. And, you never need an invitation to go Down Home.

The new Paula Deen Home Collection from Universal Furniture, Down Home captures the essence of comfortable, casual living. Drawing inspiration from the culture of Paula Deen's beloved Savannah, its relaxed nature embraces a mix of English, French, Dutch, and uniquely early American design native to the low country region. Forming a cohesive collection with a touch of eclecticism, each piece is inviting, created to foster an environment which treats family like company and company like family.

The authentic character of Down Home stems from timeworn finishes on rustic poplar, a wetland-grown hardwood indigenous to the Savannah area. Laying the wood in uneven planks contributes a lived-in look which is reminiscent of hand-planed, solid wood antiques. A lovingly distressed deep Molasses finish and a lighter Oatmeal finish showcase, in varying degrees, the mineral streaks native to poplar wood. Select pieces feature two painted accent finishes, which resemble a well worn, rubbed-through blue Screen Door or a chipped white Porch Swing.

Signature motifs include window sash bolts and gate latches on cabinets, heavy gauge mesh screens, tulip finials on low poster beds, hand-tied hanging pillows on the backs of dining chairs, antiqued numbered escutcheons on storage drawers, and screen door panels on table shelves. Simple bun feet, traditional dentil molding, keyhole details, and hardware resembling a screen door handle are as warm and welcoming as Paula herself.

Down Home is familiar and functional with a generous helping of Southern hospitality. Here, no one puts on airs and you can just be yourself. Nobody will mind, because everyone feels at home with Down Home.
